Already spent 60 seconds checking whether your money is in the UIF? Right here, you can find out in a few minutes if you have a balance sitting somewhere — without calling the call centre, without standing in a queue, without paperwork.
Thousands of South Africans have contributions registered in their name and never check them. Some because they changed jobs. Some because they never knew the portal existed. This page shows you the exact steps to verify your UIF status today.

What you can check right now
Before you log in, it helps to know exactly what you’re looking for. UIF portals let you see four things in particular:
- Your latest UIF contribution status (last 12 months). Every month your employer paid over 1% of your salary, and you paid 1%, should show up.
- Outstanding balance from previous employment. Even if you left that job years ago, those contributions are still yours.
- Pending maternity, illness or adoption benefits. If you ever claimed and never heard back, you can track the status here.
- Any employer who has not paid over your contributions. This is the one most workers miss — and the most important.
If even one of these points looks off when you log in, you have a real reason to dig further.
Two main ways to check
Option 1 — UIF Online (uFiling)
The fastest way. Most checks take under five minutes:
- Go to ufiling.co.za or uifonline.labour.gov.za.
- Log in with your South African ID number and the cellphone number you registered with your employer.
- Open the “Statements” tab to see your monthly contributions.
- Cross-check each month against your payslips — every deduction should match a registered payment.
If you have never registered on uFiling before, the portal walks you through a one-time sign-up using your ID and a few basic details.
Option 2 — Phone helpline
If you’d rather speak to someone, the Department of Employment and Labour runs a dedicated line:
Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 16:00
Cost: Free from any SA landline or mobile
Have your SA ID number and at least one payslip ready when you call — it speeds things up considerably.
What to look for in your results
The statements page is plain, but you only really need to check three things:
- Months registered. You should see an entry for every month you worked and contributed.
- Amount paid. Each row should show roughly 1% of your gross salary for that month. If the number is wildly off, something didn’t go through correctly.
- Employer name. Each row is tagged with the business that paid. Look for any name you don’t recognise.
Don’t panic if you spot one or two gaps. Some gaps are clerical. But a pattern of missing months, or any gap longer than three months, deserves attention.

If something looks wrong
Stays factual: mistakes and missing contributions are common, and most can be resolved without going to court or escalating things.
If your employer deducted UIF from your salary but no record appears on the portal, you can still claim the money you are owed. The Department of Employment and Labour has a formal complaint process for exactly this situation — and you don’t need a lawyer to start it.
The full claim guide covers what to submit, who to contact, and how long each step usually takes. You’ll find it linked right below.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to check my UIF balance?
Yes. Both uFiling and the official uifonline.labour.gov.za portal are free to use. The phone helpline (0800 030 007) is also free from any South African number. You should never be asked to pay a fee to view your own UIF statement.
Do I need my SA ID to check?
Yes. Your South African ID number is the primary identifier on the UIF system. You’ll also need the cellphone number that was registered with your employer, since the system sends a one-time PIN to that number for login.
What if I forgot which employers I worked for?
That’s exactly what the portal helps with. Once you log in, your statement will list every employer who registered UIF contributions under your ID number. It’s a useful way to reconstruct your full work history, even if your memory is patchy.
Can I check if I worked under a different name?
Only if your ID number stayed the same. UIF is registered against your SA ID, not your name, so any work done under the same ID — even under a different surname or spelling — should still appear on your statement.
How long does it take to see updated contributions?
Most employers submit UIF contributions monthly. Updates usually appear on the portal within 7 to 14 days after the end of the month. If your latest contribution is more than 30 days old and you know you were working, that’s worth flagging.
