How to Claim From the Guardian’s Fund — Step by Step Guide

If you found your name (or a family member’s name) on the September list, the claim process is straightforward. The Government calls it form J251, and it’s entirely free.

Average processing time is 4 to 8 weeks from submission to payment. The fastest claims happen when you submit complete documentation on your first try.

Before starting the claim, make sure you have:

• Your certified SA ID — book or smart card (certified copy)
• Your relationship to the deceased — marriage certificate, birth certificate, or family tree document
• The deceased’s death certificate — if applicable (for inherited accounts)
• The list reference — the year and page where you found your name

There are 6 Master’s Offices in South Africa. Each covers a specific region. You can also lodge claims at MOVIT offices in other locations.

Form J251 is the official Guardian’s Fund claim form. You can get it:

• At any Master’s Office (in person)
• At any Magistrate Court
• By contacting the Master’s Office handling your claim
• Online via the Department of Justice website (where available)

Fill it out completely and accurately. False information can delay your claim or result in rejection.

Once you’ve submitted form J251, the Master’s Office will take your fingerprints for identity verification. This happens at the Master’s Office or Magistrate Court. The process is free.

Fingerprint verification is the Master’s way of ensuring the inheritance is paid to the right person. It’s a standard procedure for all Guardian’s Fund claims.

Once verified, the funds are paid directly into your bank account via electronic transfer (EFT). No cheques, no cash, no intermediaries.

Processing time is typically 4 to 8 weeks from submission to payment. If there are complications (missing documents, disputes, etc.), it can take longer.

If you’re claiming money that was held for you as a minor, the process is slightly different:

• The fund holds the money until you turn 18
• A parent or legal guardian can claim on your behalf with a court order
• Once you turn 18, you can claim directly with your own ID
• The funds may have been earning interest for years, so the amount can be substantial

South African law prohibits anyone from charging a fee to help you claim from the Guardian’s Fund. The Master issues cheques only in the name of the verified beneficiary.

Protect yourself:

• Only contact the Master’s Office directly via official government channels
• Never pay any upfront fee to “release” or “find” your inheritance
• Never share banking details with someone who contacted you first
• Verify any claim by calling the government office directly using the official number
